<br />
I've been noticing a few hits on the auction so I thought I'd better pop in and let you all know that there won't be a Pens for Paws Auction this year. With two books coming out, I just won't have the time to manage it.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, if you'd like to donate to Fat Kitty City and their programs, you can still hit that donate button in the sidebar. And if you're local to El Dorado Hills, the sanctuary has a great need for people to feed the kitties! They are extremely grateful kitties and pay you back with cuddles and purring.<br />
<br />
<br />
I hope to see you all right back here in 2019!<br />

<br />
Bitsy Kemper is the proud author of 17 children’s books: six picture books (Picture
Window Books, Tun Tun), seven chapter books (Lerner, The Child's World)
and four teen/YA (Rosen, ReferencePointPress). If she looks familiar to
you, you may have seen her interviewed on CNN, on one of her regular TV
gigs in Sacramento, Phoenix, Portland or Albuquerque, read the
nationally-syndicated newspaper column she co-wrote, or maybe you saw
one of the literally hundreds of magazines and newspapers articles she
either wrote or was quoted in from her corporate days, including <i>PC Week</i>, <i>Working Mother </i>and <i>Investor’s Business Daily. </i>When
not nose down and knee deep creating & editing her own work, she
truly enjoys helping other writers soar. That's one of the reasons she
volunteers as Regional Advisor for the SCBWI CA North/Central region.
Bitsy is an active speaker, mother of three (four if you count her
husband), and according to her blog, a really nice gal.<br />

Jennifer Allis Provost writes books about faeries, orcs and elves.
Zombies too. She grew up in the wilds of Western Massachusetts and had
read every book in the local library by age twelve. (It was a small
library). An early love of mythology and folklore led to her epic
fantasy series, The Chronicles of Parthalan, and her day job as a
cubicle monkey helped shape her urban fantasy, Copper Girl. When she’s
not writing about things that go bump in the night (and sometimes during
the day) she’s working on her MFA in Creative Nonfiction.<br />

Beth Phelan represents authors of middle grade, young adult, and select
adult fiction (including contemporary romance, suspense/thrillers, and
upmarket fiction), as well as the occasional cookbook or pop
culture/humor project.
<br />
<br />
"I am most drawn to voice and emotional resonance in young adult
contemporary, rich literary voices in middle grade, and immersive worlds
in YA and MG fantasy. I am particularly fond of stories with smart
humor and a touch of the bittersweet. For adult fiction, I like complex
stories with strong plotting; smart and sexy romance, and female-driven
suspense/thrillers with twists that I’d never see coming.<br />
<br />
After graduating from New York University, I found my footing as an
intern with the Levine Greenberg Literary Agency. Since then, I've held
positions at Waxman Leavell Literary and Howard Morhaim Literary Agency.
I’ve been with the Bent Agency since September 2013. I also run #DVpit

<span style="color: #2a2a2a;">Kathleen Rushall of Andrea Brown Literary is offering a grab-bag of four books, tailored to the winner's tastes!</span><br />
(click on the headline above to see more!)<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #2a2a2a;">Kathleen comes to the Andrea Brown Literary Agency
after agenting for nearly five years with the Marsal Lyon Literary
Agency. She represents writers and illustrators for picture books (both
fiction and non-fiction), middle grade, and young adult literature.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #2a2a2a;">When
it comes to picture books, Kathleen loves to laugh and have her
heartstrings pulled, and likes quirky character driven stories with
heart. Kathleen is also actively building her list of nonfiction picture
books. She would love to find more biographies and what some call
“ficinformational” picture books (books with a fictional story that ties
into the Common Core).</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #2a2a2a;">Kathleen
is actively looking for fresh middle grade across all genres. She has a
soft spot for heartfelt stories, as well as humorous contemporary with a
relatable voice. She particularly enjoys middle grade with strong
friendship themes. She would be happy to find a middle grade fantasy,
adventure, historical, or a high stakes story with a twist of magic.</span> <span style="color: #2a2a2a;">For
YA novels, Kathleen loves voice-driven contemporary (and is especially
fond of magical realism), compelling fantasy with unforgettable
characters, historical fiction, and romance with lots of chemistry.
Additionally, she is always on the lookout for something smart and edgy
that pushes the envelope.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #2a2a2a;">Kathleen’s
YA list includes Laurie E. Flynn’s boundary-pushing contemporary FIRSTS
(St. Martins/Macmillan); Lisa Maxwell’s spellbinding UNHOOKED (Simon
Pulse/S&S); Marci Curtis’s heartfelt contemporary THE ONE THING
(Disney*Hyperion); and Breeana Shields’s gripping fantasy, POISON’S KISS
(Random House/PRH). Some of her middle grade titles include Lois
Sepahban’s moving PAPER WISHES (Margaret Ferguson Books/Macmillan); and
Jess Keating’s humorous My Life is a Zoo series (Sourcebooks). Recent
picture book releases include Josh Funk’s riotous LADY PANCAKE AND SIR
FRENCH TOAST (Sterling); Lori Alexander’s imaginative BACKHOE JOE
(HarperCollins); and Jess Keating’s clever PINK IS FOR BLOBFISH
(Knopf/PRH).</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #2a2a2a;">Some
topics that are close to her heart (and that she’d love to find
incorporated into picture books or novels) include environmentalism and
conservation; animal welfare; women in science, literature, and
technology; and little known events or people in history. She’d like to
find diversity in all of the above. Kathleen is </span><u><span style="color: #2a2a2a;">not</span></u><span style="color: #2a2a2a;"> looking for poetry collections, alphabet books, anything where the lesson overshadows the plot, or religious texts.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #2a2a2a;">In
addition to her children’s list, Kathleen also represents select adult
non-fiction and is interested in mind/body/spirit books.</span><br />

handling her own list, she oversees the daily operations of the SDLA
office, and works closely with <a href="http://www.dijkstraagency.com/about-sandra-dijkstra.html">Sandra Dijkstra</a>
on author development and management. She is most interested in
character-driven literary fiction and well-written narrative non-fiction
(particularly serious history with a good story).<br />
<br />
A graduate of Emerson College, Elise holds a BFA in Writing,
Literature and Publishing. She has been with the Dijkstra Agency since
late 2003.<br />
<br />
Elise is interested in fiction that has unforgettable writing, a
distinctive narrative voice, and memorable characters. She loves novels
with an unusual or eccentric edge and is drawn to stories she has never
heard before. She aims to work with writers who are getting their work
published regularly in magazines and who have a realistic sense of the
market and their audience.<br />
<br />
On the non-fiction front, Elise is looking for fascinating true
stories told in a compelling way. Currently, Elise is especially
interested in working with up-and-coming scholars (particularly
historians) who are looking to transition from the academic market to a
trade readership, as well as journalists.<br />
<br />
<b>Please note that Elise is specifically <i>not</i> interested in:</b>
fantasy, young-adult/middle-grade, picture books, romance, sci-fi,
business books, cookbooks, poetry, religious/spiritual books,
screenplays, or self-help. And while she will consider memoir, please
note that she takes on little in this area.<br />
<b>Elise is NOT currently accepting unsolicited submissions, so this is a great opportunity to get your work in front of her!</b><br />

Literary agent <a href="http://www.dijkstraagency.com/meet-the-agents.html#jessica-watterson" target="_blank"><b>Jessica Watterson of Sandra Dijkstra</b></a> is offering up a critique of your query!<br />
(click on the headline above to see more!)<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Jessica has been an agent at the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency since 2014.<br />
<br />
A graduate of the University of California at Irvine, Jessica has
immersed herself in books and literature from the time she could first
read. While in college, she started an indie review blog that has
featured author interviews and reviewed several self-published books
that eventually ended up on the <i>New York Times </i>Best Seller list.<br />
<br />
Jessica is always on the hunt for new and diverse voices, and is most
interested in all genres of romance. For historical romance, she favors
settings in America, Scotland, or somewhere outside of the traditional
Regency setting. <br />
<br />
In the contemporary sphere, she loves novels with strong characters
that jump off of the page and stay with you long after you have finished
the book.<br />
<br />
In paranormal romance, she is looking for anything unusual and unique, vampires need not apply.<br />
In regards to romantic suspense, it takes something different and
edgy to capture her attention, and she greatly enjoys anything Kristen
Ashely has written in this genre.<br />
<br />
She also loves Women’s Fiction that concerns itself with elements of
life that can greatly change one’s perspective and outlook on cultures
and experiences.<br />
<br />
On the YA side, Jessica is looking for just about anything that
aligns itself with fantasy, sci-fi, contemporary, lgbtq reads,
#ownvoices, and of course a bit of romance thrown in is never a bad
thing in her opinion.<br />
<br />
She is also interested in author illustrated picture books that capture the fun and joy of reading between adults and children.<br />
<br />
Jessica’s sales include: Amber Lynn Natusch’s <i>Dare to Tell a Lie </i>(Tor Teen), Katie Ruggle’s <i>Christmas</i> <i>Search and Rescue/K9 </i>novel (Sourcebooks), Jade Chandler’s <i>Brotherhood Investigations </i>(Carina Press), Dawn Luedecke’s <i>Montana Mountain Series </i>(Lyrical/Kensington), Debbie Burns <i>Rescue Me Series</i>(Sourcebooks), Emily Alibright’s <i>Everyday Magic</i> (Merit Press).<br />
<br />
<b>Please note that Jessica is specifically not interested in</b>: middle grade, non-fiction, memoir, cookbooks, poetry, short stories, screenplays, self-help, or religious/spiritual books.<br />
<br />
(Jessica also wanted to give a shout-out to <a href="http://www.thebarkinglot.net/" target="_blank"><b>The Barking Lot</b></a>, the shelter where she adopted her own special pup!)<br />

<a name='more'></a><br />
About Other Breakable Things:<br />
<br />
<i>According to Japanese legend, folding a thousand paper cranes will grant you healing. </i><br />
<br />
<i>Evelyn Abel will fold two thousand if it will bring Luc back to her. <br /><br />Luc Argent has always been intimately acquainted with death. After a car crash got him a second chance at life—via someone else’s transplanted heart—he tried to embrace it. He truly did. But he always knew death could be right around the corner again. <br /><br />And now it is. </i> <i>Sick of hospitals and tired of transplants, Luc is ready to let his failing heart give out, ready to give up. A road trip to Oregon—where death with dignity is legal—is his answer. But along for the ride is his best friend, Evelyn. <br /><br />And she’s not giving up so easily. <br /><br />A thousand miles, a handful of roadside attractions, and one life-altering kiss later, Evelyn’s fallen, and Luc’s heart is full. But is it enough to save him? Evelyn’s betting her heart, her life, that it can be. <br /><br />Right down to the thousandth paper crane.</i><br />

This is a great item to bid on if you're really struggling with a scene! In her own words: "I can offer a 10-15 page scene critique/ line edit. Sender can include a page of summary (up to that point) and synopsis (after that point) but I’ll only comment on/ edit the scene...It should be a good buy for people who feel like they have a hard time getting professional eyes on middle sections, or have crucial or pivotal scenes that they really want to get right."<span style="color: black; font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11.0pt;"> </span><br />

On a hilltop in Ione, California, there stands an unlikely
castle with fanciful turrets and a</div>

soaring clock tower, with its ruddy bricks warmed by the
afternoon light. This is Preston Castle, formerly known as the Preston School
of Industry, which operated as a youth correctional facility from 1894 through
1960.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Fascinated by this unique building, I have photographed its
interior over a ten-year period, and learned something of its history. Meanwhile,
the Preston Castle Foundation has been working to preserve and restore selected
rooms, and many of these photos will take you back in time to their state of
arrested decay.</div>

About <i>Letters to the Lost</i>:<br />
Juliet Young has always written letters to her mother, a world-traveling photojournalist. Even after her mother’s death, she leaves letters at her grave. It’s the only way Juliet can cope. <br />
<br />
Declan Murphy isn’t the sort of guy you want to cross. In the midst of his court-ordered community service at the local cemetery, he’s trying to escape the demons of his past. <br />
<br />
When Declan reads a haunting letter left beside a grave, he can’t resist writing back. Soon, he’s opening up to a perfect stranger, and their connection is immediate. But neither of them knows that they’re not actually strangers. When real life at school interferes with their secret life of letters, Juliet and Declan discover truths that might tear them apart. This emotional, compulsively-readable romance will sweep everyone off their feet.<br />

<br />
No one at school knows that Kelsey, Becca, and Leo are secretly friends. They have nothing in common--until they rescue three kittens and form a club to help animals through volunteering, spying, and solving mysteries. In the first book of this series, Kelsey helps catch a runaway zorse (horse + zebra) with the help of another girl from school named Becca. The two are walking home when they happen upon a litter of kittens trapped in a dumpster and Leo Polanski is the only person around who can help get them out. The three unlikely friends decide to work together to help solve animal crimes with their secret club<br />

When a mysterious stranger claims to own Becca's beloved zorse, Zed, something seems suspicious. Besides, if this person is Zed's real owner, the Curious Cat Spy Club fears he might be responsible for abusing Zed in the past. Kelsey, Becca, and Leo are determined to uncover the truth before they have to give Zed away. But when a daring rescue attempt puts Kelsey in danger, does the CCSC have enough spy skills to save her or are they in over their heads?<br />

Kelsey can’t resist collecting secrets in her spy notebook just like her hero, Harriet the Spy. When she learns Leo has been hiding something from the group, she writes his secret in her notebook as well. But when the notebook goes missing, everything she’s collected about classmates, friends, and family could be revealed to the world! After receiving a ransom note, Kelsey tries to solve the mystery on her own. But she soon realizes she needs help from everyone in the CCSC to rescue the notebook, help a homesick 130-year-old Aldabra tortoise, and unmask a thief.<br />

emotional layers well. Pet lovers will enjoy the animal-centric focus,
and the mystery will keep them guessing." Publishers Weekly, January 5,
2015<br />
<br />
"This enjoyable mystery has a satisfying ending and a neatly
calibrated level of suspense for middle school readers." Kirkus
Reviews, January 15, 2015<br />
<br />
"Ultimately as fuzzy and accessible as a
kitten chasing a ball of string, this story--and subsequent titles in
the series--will likely find a ready audience among animal lovers,
amateur sleuths, and the fairly common combination of the two." The
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, June 1, 2015

Alex Barba of Inklings Literary is offering up a critique of your query and 1st 5 pages!<br />
(click on the headline above to see more!)<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Alex Barba is an agent and the foreign rights contact at Inklings Literary Agency.<br />
<br />
Alex
has a background in publishing and entertainment. She came to Inklings
after a stint as a literary consultant in New York City, having scouted
the U.S. book market for film and TV clients and foreign publishers.
Prior to that, she spent time in Los Angeles as an editor at a digital
magazine, and doing story development on scripts with a literary
management company. <br />
<br />
<br />
She represents YA and MG fiction, and is primarily looking for contemporary YA, but will also welcome queries of contemporary YA with light fantasy or sci-fi elements. A clever retelling/re-spin of an old classic is always thrilling (think Ella Enchanted, her favorite book). She's particularly seeking issue-driven YA, empowered girl protagonists, compelling teen romance, positive (not too angsty) stories with nerdy girl or boy characters, stories about that awkward tween phase (ages 9-13), slightly dark/subversive story lines for upper YA, strong female friendships, and historical fiction (think the original American Girl series). <br />
<br />
For more specific story interests, see her #MSWL tweets @AlexandraBarba.<br />
<br />
Please NO: picture books, poetry, adult non-fiction, genre romance, crime/mystery or sci-fi/fantasy for the adult market.<br />

My own schedule is shaping up to be a little busier this year and I went back and forth on whether to hold the auction this year, but the kitties haven't stopped needing our help--so it was an easy decision after all!<br />
<br />
I'll be holding the Pens for Paws Auction on April 24th through 28th this year, and I hope you'll join me in supporting Fat Kitty City, a cage-free, no-kill cat sanctuary in El Dorado Hills, California.<br />
<br />
Check out the <a href="http://pensforpaws.blogspot.com/p/donate-items-for-auction.html" target="_blank">Donate page</a> for instructions on how to donate an item for the auction, and the <a href="http://pensforpaws.blogspot.com/p/how-it-works.html" target="_blank">How It Works page</a> if you'd like info on how to place bids once the items are live. And as always, there will be an Items Featuring In The 2017 Auction page, updated as donations come in.<br />

<br />
We had the most items on offer this year--in fact, I had to turn some donors away because I just couldn't handle any more posts by myself--but there were a handful of items that didn't get any bids at all. I did hear from one person that they'd tried to bid, but Blogger was acting up for them. I may look into alternative hosting sites for next year.<br />
<br />
Speaking of next year, I may have to change the timing of the auction--I took on the Illustrator Coordinator position for SCBWI CA North/Central, and our regional conference usually takes place in April or May. It was crazy enough this year to have both events back-to-back, when I was just stepping into the IC role and also my other volunteer duties at the conference!<br />
<br />
What would really help ease my mind is if I could get some commitments from volunteers who would like to help, so that next year can be even better than ever! I'd need help with arranging donations (don't worry, the agents and authors are friendly), scheduling posts, monitoring bids, closing out items, and compiling a list of donors for Fat Kitty City to send out thank you notes.<br />
<br />
This might be a good time to mention that out of respect for privacy issues, no one is added to a mailing list for FKC--but if you'd like to stay in touch, you can find a newsletter signup and social media links <b><a href="http://www.fatkittycity.org/" target="_blank">here</a></b><br />
<br />
Thanks so much to those who donated items, and those who bid. A grateful Cindy from Fat Kitty City says: "This year is our 10th Anniversary since we started back in 2006, rescuing 73 cats from Pollardville, and we've managed to save over 3000 (cats, kittens and even a fair amount of dogs and puppies, too). Amazing what a difference people can make!"<br />Angelica R.
